Matilde, Cencio, Fulvio and Mario are a family in the circus where they work as “freaks” in 1943 Nazi-occupied Rome. Israel, the owner of the circus and father-figure, disappears in an attempt to find an escape route overseas for them all. Without anyone looking after them but, above all, without the circus, they lose their way and feel lost as rudderless sideshow attractions in a city at war. Meanwhile, Franz, a six-figured Nazi with visions of the future, seeks out the four believing that they hold the key to Hitler’s success.
