Born Alfred Cini in 1927 Philadelphia the young Al seemed certain from an early age the direction his life would take. His idols in his younger years were the ever popular Perry Como and Al Jolson both of whom commanded a worldwide following; but his biggest incentive came when family friend Mario Lanza encouraged the young Al to join the music industry and perform. Al was soon to get his big break when in 1952 he was offered the opportunity to record 'Here In My Heart' which coincidentally was also going to be recorded by Mario Lanza until Al asked him, as a friend, not to cover the song. Mario agreed and the song catapulted Al onto the world stage by becoming a million seller in the States as well as the UK which made him the first American artist to top the singles charts in both countries.
